Medial branch nerves are small nerves protruding from the facet joints (very small joints) in the spine. These nerves transmit pain signals from the facet joints to the brain. A medial branch nerve block is a procedure which involves the injection of anaesthesia near small medial branch nerves that are connected to facet joints. This may provide significant pain relief immediately after the procedure, where the facet joint is indeed the source of the patient’s pain.
