Spinal Cord Stimulator

A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) (also known as a dorsal column stimulator (DCS)) is a battery-powered device which is placed over the spinal cord. The implanted device alleviates chronic pain from conditions such as arthritis and bulging discs, where standard pain management treatment protocols are ineffective, by delivering low-voltage electrical currents to the back of the spinal cord. SCS works by reducing the unpleasant experience of pain, rather than treating the underlying condition. An SCS device can improve quality of life for a patient dramatically and reduces reliance on powerful medications such as opiates, which can result in addiction.
