There are four spinal surgery procedures which are regularly performed on patients: discectomy; foraminotomy; laminectomy; and spinal fusion. A discectomy seeks to resolve spinal disc issues by removing a portion of the damaged disc, if not all, and replacing it with an artificial disc which is inserted to preserve the stability of the spine. In foraminotomy, the space within the spinal foramen (a hollow passageway through which spinal nerves travel) is increased, in order to allow nerves to pass through freely and reduce spinal nerve compression. A laminectomy involves the removal of the lamina (a part of the vertebral bone), which reduces pressure on the key spinal nerves, or the spinal canal. Spinal fusion surgery is where a surgeon fuses the two adjacent vertebrae to reduce excess movement in the area. It is commonly used where the spinal disc has deteriorated, causing hypermobility, for instance.
